Filmmaker of the Week: Shosho Dania

Continuing our workshop instructor series, we are pleased to introduce Shosho Dania! Shosho is a certified audio engineer and musician based in Calgary. He runs a full time commercial recording studio in the NE, Solace Studios, where he services local artists, podcasters and post for independent films. Shosho has over 3 years experience with professional audio work.

CSIF: Tell us about yourself; what do you do in the film industry?

SHOSHO DANIA: I am a certified audio engineer who works out of a professional recording studio, Solace Studios. I mainly work with music clients but have worked with the occasional short film maker to improve the quality of film production.

CSIF: How did you get started in filmmaking? Why did you decide to work in the industry?

SD: I got my start in filmmaking through my audio certification at The Academy of Production and Recording Arts. There, I was introduced to the different techniques used in the industry to achieve the highest quality. I decided to work in entertainment because it’s work that I am passionate about.

CSIF: What movie(s) inspired you to work in the film industry?

SD: All of Quentin Tarantino’s movies and superhero movies.

CSIF: What kinds of stories are you interested in telling?

SD: Ones that show relatable and real human emotions and struggles and end with the lead overcoming obstacles.

CSIF: What is the most important thing you’ve learned about working in the film industry thus far?

SD: Every project is different.

CSIF: What advice do you have for others looking to work in the film industry?

SD: Be patient and always be the hardest worker in the room.

CSIF: What is the most embarrassing or funniest thing that has happened to you on set?

SD: Forgetting a line.

CSIF: Tell us about your most recent project.

SD: I was responsible for doing foley for an independent action film still in the works. It required me to get creative with a lot of the sounds in the scenes.

CSIF: Any final thoughts/words regarding filmmaking?

SD: Be original.

CSIF: What is a film that you wish you made and why?

SD: Pulp Fiction. Its story is so brilliant.
