Filmmaker of the Week: Michelle Owusu

THIS WEEK’S FILMMAKER IS MICHELLE OWUSU. MICHELLE’S SHORT FILM THE SURROGATE SCREENED AT THE 2021 CALGARY INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL BACK IN SEPTEMBER. KEEP READING TO LEARN ALL ABOUT MICHELLE!

CSIF: Tell us about yourself; what do you do in the film industry?

Michelle Owusu: I am a screenwriter and film producer.

CSIF: How did you get started in filmmaking? Why did you decide to become a filmmaker?

MO: I first got started by writing and producing a short film called The Surrogate with an amazing crew.

CSIF: What inspired you to become a filmmaker?

MO: I’ve always loved storytelling growing up as a kid. I used to make home videos with my friends. As I grew older and worked in a corporate job, I wanted a creative way to express myself and screenwriting and filmmaking felt like the best way to do that!

CSIF: What kinds of stories are you interested in telling?

MO: I am interested in telling stories that matter. I like taking experiential approaches to everyday life moments to potentially offer a different way of looking at a situation.

CSIF: What is the most important thing you’ve learned in your practice as a filmmaker so far?

MO: So far, the most important thing I’ve learned in my practice is to keep going and make measurable goals. I think often we work towards achievements, but it’s important to make small goals for yourself, like writing 500 words each day or editing for 1 hour each day. Try to break it down, if you are steadily working towards your goals you’ll eventually achieve your dreams!

CSIF: What advice do you have for other filmmakers?

MO: Don’t stop.

CSIF: What is the most embarrassing or funniest thing that has happened to you on set?

MO: I didn’t have crafty, and needed to order more! Note: Make sure your crew is well fed!

CSIF: Tell us about your most recent project.

I had the opportunity to work with a great crew on The Surrogate! We received an equipment rental grant from CSIF, and so far have been in the Vancouver Independent Film Festival, Calgary International Film Festival, London Indie Film Festival, and the Toronto Black Film Festival.

CSIF: What is a film that you wish you made and why?

MO: Field of Dreams. I think it’s an incredibly well-done film that just has a little bit of magic in it. Whenever I watch it I walk away feeling inspired and content. I’d like to make movies that impart something to people.

Favourite movie(s): Field of Dreams, The Intouchables, Les Misérables, Shawshank Redemption
