Approaching the Feature Film

For the short filmmaker who is ready to venture into long format territory. Be it a dramatic or documentary, this two day workshop is equal parts examination of feature story telling and approach to building creative elements, as well as producing in practical terms in today's market. Running two consecutive Saturdays, participants must have a feature, as a detailed outline, treatment or script, to build from and plan for.
Cinematography: the art, the story, and the team

This workshop explores how Cinematographer's use their artistry, craft, and technology to author images supporting the Director's interpretation of the story. Participants will examine how the quality, angle, colour, and quantity of light affects or influences the image. Composition, lens selection, depth of field, aspect ratio, camera height and camera movement and their collective effect on the story are also discussed. How Cinematographer's work collaboratively with the Director, Production Designer or Art Director, and other members of the production team to create the "look" is another important aspect that is reviewed. The goal is to provide workshop participants techniques they can implement on their productions.
Editing Film and Video with Final Cut Pro Sat June 22 & Sun June 23 10am-5pm Instructor Duane Martin Cost Members $135 Non Members $180 Enrollment is limited to 8 Participants
Day 1. Covers basic setup issues for editing, such as connecting video equipment, digitizing footage, and printing to video. An overview of the Macintosh Operating System and Final Cut Pro software will be provided. Participants will have the opportunity to learn these skills hands-on using the CSIF’s edit suite. Everyone will leave with the ability to make a cut. Day 2. This class is a more intensive look at the capabilities of Final Cut Pro. This will include professional colour correction techniques and animated titling. You will also learn media management, file organization and speed tricks to make the most of your time in the edit suite. Participants will experiment with their new skills on the CSIF’s editing facilities.
Super 8 Transfer Workshop Sat June 29, 1st Session 10am-1pm and 2nd Session 2pm-5pm Instructor Yvonne Abusow Cost Members $50 Non Members $95 Enrollment is limited to 4 Participants in the A.M slot and 4 in the P.M slot.
Learn to use the CSIF’s Video WorkPrinter-XP Super 8 transfer machine. Transfer your super 8 film and achieve stunning, ultra high quality transfers of both regular 8mm and super 8mm film to NTSC video. The video WorkPrinter uses a video camera and a Apple computer to capture your 8mm film to a computer hard drive with 100% frame accuracy and without ever touching tape, guaranteeing the clearest, most crisp picture possible next to a Rank telecine transfer. This three hour course will familiarize participants with the CSIF’s super 8 transfer facility and certify them to operate it. Each participant will complete a video transfer of 1 - 50’ reel of 8mm or Super 8 film to be transferred
