The 16th Annual $100 Film Festival wrapped up on Saturday, March 15 and was a complete success! The audiences were amazing, with higher attendance this year and lots of great feedback; the films were stellar and we had the pleasure of hosting several visiting filmmakers. Our closing party kind of sucked because the venue double-booked and didn't have room for us, but those of us that went to the other bar had a mighty fine time. Congratulations to our 2008 $100 Film Festival Award Winners! Best of Alberta Alberta (sponsored by the Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society): David Ratzlaff for "Evaporation", 16mm (Calgary, CANADA) Jury Award (sponsored by IATSE Local 212): Ben Rivers for "This is My Land", 16mm (London, UK) Best Super 8 Film Award (sponsored by Beatroute Magazine): Scott Amos for "Grass", Super 8 (Victoria, CANADA) Best 16mm Film Award (sponsored by Matrix Video Communications): Albert Sackl for "Von Innen, Von aussen", 16mm (Vienna, AUSTRIA) Audience Favorite Award (Sponsored by Calgary Film, Calgary Economic Development): Gregory Godhard for "A Room With Askew", 16mm (Sydney, AUSTRALIA) The Jury also awarded Boston, MA media artist Robert Todd a Special Recognition Award for his films: 21 Alleys, Dig and Interplay. A big thank you to the Awards Jury this year: Tom Babin, The Calgary Herald; Sandi Somers, independent media artist; Charles Tepperman, The University of Calgary. Thank you to all the great filmmakers that screened with the $100 this year, the wonderful musicians and bands that played at the festival for the Film / Music Explosion (This is a Death House, EggsHale and iblamerobot), our great emcee's from CJSW 90.9 FM and X92.9 FM, the volunteers who made the festival run, the Plaza Theatre and the collection of media arts cooperatives around Canada where a lot of these filmmakers come from. Last but not least, thanks to everyone who supported the festival by coming to the festival and also by sponsoring it. Next year's festival will be better than ever! - Melody Jacobson (Programming Coordinator)
